When it comes to charging technology, wired charging has already reached bigger heights with faster charger speeds of up to 12W fast charging technology which is currently being worked on. However, when it comes to wireless charging, companies have been trying to develop it even further to get the same amount of charging speeds as with wired technology. Now Xiaomi has announced its “Mi Air Charge” tech, which can charge the phone from a distance and is very unique in itself. The tech seems to be coming right out of the future and can charge multiple devices at once from a distance with up to 5W charging support.
The company claims that the charging process will not be interrupted by any kind of obstacles like furniture or objects. The company has explained the tech behind it and confirms that it has a phase control array composed of 144 antennas that transmit millimeter-wide waves directly to the phone through beamforming from the large charging base. The base seems to be the size of a small table that you can keep in the living room and will easily blend in. As per the official statement from Xiaomi, “The core technology of Xiaomi’s remote charging lies in space positioning and energy transmission. Xiaomi’s self-developed isolated charging pile has five phase interference antennas built-in, which can accurately detect the location of the smartphone. A phase control array composed of 144 antennas transmits millimeter-wide waves directly to the phone through beamforming.“
Also, “On the smartphone side, Xiaomi has also developed a miniaturized antenna array with a built-in “beacon antenna” and “receiving antenna array.” Beacon antenna broadcasts position information with low power consumption. The receiving antenna array composed of 14 antennas converts the millimeter-wave signal emitted by the charging pile into electric energy through the rectifier circuit, to turn the sci-fi charging experience into reality.“
