The Dock Dilemma: Unlocking the Potential of the Google Pixel Tablet

The Google Pixel Tablet is an unusual combination of tablet and Nest Hub functionality. This unique approach, however, creates a conundrum, resulting in its identity as a decent tablet and an acceptable smart home center. Regrettably, the provided dock lacks functionality and becomes completely useless when used alongside a USB device.

The dock is a clever and small addition that, with a simple magnetic attachment, turns your Pixel Tablet into a smart home screen. By purchasing numerous docks, you may easily mount the tablet in different rooms across your home. The dock’s major function, aside from charging, is to improve music output with its larger speaker system. Unfortunately, when the tablet’s USB-C port is used, the dock’s speakers stop working.

A Mastodon user just discovered something unusual regarding the Pixel Tablet’s dock speakers. When an accessory is connected to the tablet’s USB port, the dock speakers become inoperable, as Mishaal Rahman discovered. To enable the dock speakers, a message on the tablet shows that the linked USB device must be removed (as shown in the accompanying screenshot).

Rahman speculates that the Pixel Tablet may be misinterpreting the dock connection created via the Pogo ports on the back as a USB connection. As a result, the tablet may need to be prepared to manage both audio output and data transfer via its USB interface, resulting in this unusual situation for consumers. It remains to be seen whether this problem is caused by a hardware limitation linked with the onboard USB controller or if it may be resolved with a Google software update.

When a USB cable is linked to the Pixel Tablet, the dock’s speakers cannot be used by end users, while charging the tablet via USB while docked is unnecessary, this constraint may be inconvenient for users who want to attach a USB hub or other peripherals while the tablet is docked. Furthermore, as mentioned in a Mastodon discussion, the inability to submit ADB commands via USB debugging while docked exacerbates the problem.

If the Pixel Tablet’s restrictions damper your enthusiasm, investigate other top Android tablets, such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8+, which provide an even more fulfilling productivity experience.

Get Ready for the Asus Zenfone 10: Unveiling the Next Generation of Compact Excellence

The astonishing Asus Zenfone 9, released last year, defies the concept that higher smartphone performance is necessarily associated with the physical heft of a large gadget. As a result, it soon became one of our top tiny phones of the year. We are now excitedly awaiting the introduction of its successor, the Zenfone 10, and recently leaked press renders provided a glimpse into the device’s look. Additional photographs have since emerged, providing a thorough glimpse of all the color options from all angles.

The Asus Zenfone 10 is set to make its official debut on June 29 and has been the subject of multiple leaks in the lead-up to that day. Recently, WinFuture acquired a collection of leaked photographs showcasing this intriguing and pocket-friendly smartphone, which features two prominent lenses on the back and a front camera cutout on the left side. The Zenfone 10 will be available in black, blue, green, red, and white, as the leaked photographs show the gadget from every angle.

These photographs reveal numerous design choices that could help the Zenfone 10 gain popularity. For starters, it keeps an IP68 water-resistant designation, sometimes lacking in other smartphones in its class, while also providing the convenience of a 3.5mm headphone jack—a rarity in today’s smartphone scene. Furthermore, the tablet has a metal frame matched with a plastic rear decorated with the Asus logo.

A tantalizing glance at the Zenfone 10’s technical specifications suggests that it will have a 5.9-inch FHD AMOLED display with a refresh rate of 120Hz. According to rumors, the gadget will be equipped with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, 8 or 16GB of RAM, and 256GB or 512GB storage options, exceeding the 128GB variant featured in its predecessor, the Zenfone 9. A 5,000mAh battery, usually seen in top smartphones, should power the gadget for longer periods. The Zenfone 10 is expected to excel in photography, thanks to its 200MP primary camera from Samsung, an 8MP ultrawide lens, and a 32MP front-facing shooter.

While WinFuture cannot confirm the internal characteristics, all will be revealed in just a few days on June 29, leaving us excited to see the Zenfone 10.

Google Play Points: Earn Redeem and Discover Exclusive Rewards

The selection of Android apps and games on the Google Play Store is undoubtedly extensive. However, there are ways to maximize the value of your spending on this platform. One such method is leveraging Google Play Points, a program enabling users to earn points through in-app purchases and other transactions. Until recently, these points could be redeemed for various rewards, including items like Chrome Dino socks, sunglasses, sweatshirts, and discounts on third-party services like DoorDash and Instacart. Now, Google has introduced a delightful addition to its merchandise store—a captivating Android Plush soft toy.

Referred to as the Android Plush, this adorable creation stands 10.5 inches tall and spans 9 inches wide, boasting a charming circular shape, according to reports from 9to5Google. Although it has yet to surface on the web version of the Merchandise Store, Android users can find it within the Play Store app. By navigating to their profile icon and accessing the Play Points section, they can switch to the Use tab and scroll down to locate the enticing Merchandise Store header.
The listing presents the Android Plush as a “Member Exclusive Reward” redeemable for 1800 Play Points. However, 9to5Google discovered that the plush is also available for individuals in the Bronze, Gold, and Platinum tiers. It’s important to note that eligible users must claim the offer by September 30, 2023, and redeem it by the end of this year, as stated in the fine print. Google emphasizes that this is a one-time opportunity, meaning you won’t be able to acquire multiple plush toys per Google account.

With a price of 1800 points, the Android Plush is notably more affordable than other items like the Google Crewneck Sweatshirt, which requires 5000 points, or the Chrome Dino Socks, obtainable for 2100 Play Points.
Similar to the items unveiled in April, the Android Plush appears to be exclusive to the United States. However, as observed by 9to5Google, a selection of products in the Google Merchandise Store will expire on June 30, suggesting the possibility of Google introducing this charming plush toy to additional regions in the next wave of redeemable items.
News of Google’s plans to enhance the benefits available through Play Points has been circulating since last July. While Android users have long been able to redeem their points for in-app purchases, including tangible items such as the Android Plush adds an extra layer of excitement to Google’s rewarding program.

Instagram Unveils Exciting New Feature: Download and Share Reels Beyond the App

A prominent social media giant, Instagram, has recently unveiled an exciting feature bound to delight its vast user base. In response to persistent user requests over the years, Instagram has finally fulfilled its wishes by introducing the ability to download and share Reels created by others, even outside the confines of the app. This development directly responds to TikTok, which has enjoyed success by facilitating content sharing across platforms, thanks to its distinct watermark that serves as a marketing tool.

Taking to his Instagram broadcast channel on Tuesday, Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, personally announced this highly anticipated feature. He divulged that users in the United States now have the convenience of downloading Reels directly to their device’s camera roll with a simple tap on the share icon, followed by the selection of the Download option. This newfound capability empowers users with greater control over the content they produce and enjoy on Instagram. However, it raises a thought-provoking question: should such a user-friendly download option be available across all platforms?

It is important to note that downloading Reels is limited to content posted by public accounts. Additionally, public performances retain the authority to disable the download option for their Reels, should they desire more stringent control over the distribution of their content. While it remains uncertain whether downloaded Reels will bear a watermark, Mosseri’s accompanying image subtly suggests the inclusion of an Instagram logo alongside the account name. This approach mirrors TikTok’s practice of attaching a watermark to downloaded videos. Notably, Instagram had previously permitted users to download their Reels from drafts without any watermark, making this a noteworthy change.

The introduction of Reels has already made a considerable impact on Instagram’s popularity, as Mark Zuckerberg revealed during the Q1 2023 earnings call that time spent on the platform surged by an impressive 24%. Following a format akin to TikTok, the platform renowned for viral videos, Instagram’s decision to enable Reels downloads undoubtedly signifies a significant milestone in its evolutionary journey.

Signal Unveils New Update: Enhancing Messaging with Text Formatting Tools

While Telegram and WhatsApp dominate the instant messaging arena, Signal has garnered a loyal following due to its unwavering commitment to privacy. Continuously striving to enhance the user experience, Signal’s developers have introduced a range of novel features, such as disguisable icons. Today, Signal unveils its latest update, offering users a fresh set of tools. The newest beta version now incorporates text formatting capabilities, making messages more vividly expressive and understandable.

At its core, a messaging app serves as a medium of expression. Typically, individuals rely on a blend of words and emojis to convey their intended tone, with the latter supplementing the conversational nuances found in face-to-face interactions. However, including formatting options for the text, such as italics, can empower readers to emphasize specific words or other elements within a message. With the recent beta update, Signal introduces several new formatting options.

Users can now italicize or embolden text to heighten emphasis. Additionally, the ability to format content as monospace is particularly advantageous for coders seeking to share technical information that may otherwise be mistaken as part of the main sentence. Signal also facilitates strikethrough formatting, allowing users to redact erroneous information and correct previously sent messages. Lastly, a new spoiler effect has been introduced, catering to those who wish to withhold juicy plot details from the latest Marvel movie when conversing with group chat participants who have yet to watch it.

These innovative options manifest when text is selected after typing. The pop-up menu now offers choices to Cut, Copy, Bold, Italicize, and Strikethrough the ongoing text. Additionally, the three-dot overflow button presents an option to obfuscate text, preventing unintended spoilers.

Download the latest Signal beta update from the Google Play Store to access these text formatting features. Suppose you are not currently enrolled in the beta program. In that case, you may attempt to join via the provided link or patiently await the integration of these features into the stable builds, which is expected to occur in the upcoming weeks.

Immerse Yourself in Minecraft’s Trails & Tales: A Journey of Exploration

One year has passed since the launch of Minecraft’s The Wild update, and now we have the Trails & Tales Update (Minecraft 1.20) to explore. Unlike previous updates, this release doesn’t revolve around a specific theme. Still, it brings much fresh content for players, ranging from archaeology to introducing the new sniffer mob. Moreover, this update also signifies the complete release of Minecraft on Chromebooks.

Singling out a standout feature from this update is no easy task, but the beautiful cherry blossom trees will captivate your attention. Nestled within a pristine yet uncommon biome, these trees are part of two new wood sets available in the game. The other set, crafted from bamboo, finally receives its due recognition, as it has been part of Minecraft since 2018, albeit with limited applications until now.

This update introduces two new mobs, each with its distinct purpose. Mounting a camel will protect you against melee mobs, while the sniffer can locate seeds for ancient plants. The inclusion of the sniffer mob is a direct result of community voting during Minecraft Live 2022. Players must unearth sniffer eggs using the newly introduced archaeology feature to encounter this fan-requested mob.

Beyond these major additions, many minor features await exploration in this update. Signs can now be affixed to the undersides of blocks, allowing for more versatile sign placement. Armor trims allow players to personalize their armor with unique styles, adding a touch of flair to their character. Furthermore, written books can now be stored alongside regular, enchanted, and quills on bookshelves, offering a tidier storage solution.

The Trails & Tales update for Minecraft is now available across various platforms, including Windows, macOS, Linux, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, iOS, Android, and ChromeOS. While Minecraft has been accessible on select Chromebooks since March, the arrival of the Trails & Tales update signals its full release on ChromeOS. However, please note that it is not integrated with the Android release; although you can install it from the same Play Store listing, a separate purchase of $20 ($13 if you already own the Android version) is required. Moreover, running the game on one of our preferred gaming Chromebooks is recommended for optimal performance.

Users can quickly grasp the performance with a detailed daily graph displaying one stock, its current price, percentage increase or decrease throughout the day, and an up or down arrow symbolizing the change. Additionally, below the graph, the widget provides a selection of stocks from the user’s watchlist, which can be managed through a shortcut at the bottom, along with a manual refresh button. Tapping on any followed investment within the widget leads to a Google Search results page with more comprehensive information.

Exploring the widget settings reveals the ability to customize the featured stock, index, or cryptocurrency displayed at the top of the widget’s prominent graph. Users can opt for a specific store with a significant investment or choose the most crucial gain or loss recorded on a given day. Moreover, the remaining assets can be sorted alphabetically by symbol or percentage change throughout the day, in ascending or descending order.

Configuring the stocks you follow on Google employs a web-based interface accessible through the Watchlist button in the widget’s lower-left corner or by visiting google.com/finance. This interface allows users to track different indices, stocks in which they have invested, and their interest in cryptocurrencies. To facilitate organization, Google permits the creation of multiple watchlists.

While the new widget is currently available in the latest beta update via the Google Play Store, the stable version should include this feature soon following the recent announcement. For non-beta testers, it is possible to sideload the Google app beta from APKMirror and utilize the widget immediately.

Samsung’s One UI 5 Watch: A Sneak Peek into the Future of Smartwatches

Samsung recently announced their upcoming smartwatches, revealing that the devices would be equipped with an updated version of their One UI 5 Watch wearable software. Initially, Samsung had mentioned that a beta version of One UI 5 Watch would be available for Watch 4 and Watch 5 devices, with sign-ups scheduled before the end of May. However, there appears to have been a change of plans, as the One UI 5 Watch beta has been delayed.

According to a moderator on the official Samsung Community forums, as reported by SamMobile, sign-ups for the One UI 5 Watch beta will not be accepted this month. The moderator, whose username was translated to “Beta operation manager” by Google, explained that the delay resulted from challenges encountered while implementing Wear OS 4. Nonetheless, Samsung is actively working to expedite the beta program and ensure its smooth operation.

Although the sign-up process has been pushed back, it is still possible that owners of Watch 4 and Watch 5 will have the opportunity to be among the first to experience One UI 5 Watch. Speculations suggest that the Galaxy Watch 6 series, which is expected to launch in late July alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5, will come preloaded with One UI 5 Watch. Considering the original plan to open the beta program by the end of May, there is a reasonable amount of time for Samsung to address any issues that led to the sign-up delay.

One UI 5 Watch promises to introduce several enhancements to Galaxy Watch devices. Notable features include more comprehensive insights into sleep patterns and a new Heart Rate Zone feature reminiscent of Fitbit, which assigns an intensity rating from 1 to 5 to your activities based on recorded heart rate data. These improvements aim to give users a richer and more personalized experience with their Galaxy Watches.

Google Pixel 8: A Closer Look at Wireless Charging Capabilities

Carrying the GKWS6 model number, the smaller Pixel 8 passed through the WPC to receive its Qi charging approval. The listing makes it clear Google’s upcoming compact flagship will support a maximum wireless charging speed of 12W, the same as the Pixel 7. It also confirms support for Qi charging version 1.2.4, which is not the Qi2 standard (via 9to5Google).

With the Pixel Stand 2, the Pixel 7 can reach a peak wireless charging speed of 20W. Presumably, Google could offer a similar boost on the Pixel 8 when its proprietary charging stand is used.
The Pixel 8 Pro has not yet passed the Wireless Power Consortium. Google might offer Qi2 support on the bigger Pixel, though the chances are relatively slim.

While Qi2 might not seem like a significant upgrade, it allows Android manufacturers to add MagSafe to their phones, making wireless charging much more convenient daily. It also makes connecting additional accessories or mounts to your phone much easier. Thankfully, MagSafe adapters are available for popular Android phones that bring almost the same level of convenience to your existing phone. So, if you plan to get the Pixel 8 but are bummed about the possible lack of Qi2 support, you can use one such adapter.

Adding a Pop of Color: The Lost Opportunity of Apple’s Colored MagSafe Chargers

The process of developing a new product is a comprehensive endeavor that necessitates thorough groundwork. Consequently, tech giants invest billions of dollars into their Research and Development departments each year. Although these investments generally yield fruitful outcomes, there are instances where products, despite extensive efforts, never progress beyond the prototype stage. Case in point: In 2020, Apple created prototypes of MagSafe chargers in a range of captivating colors, including Starlight, Green, Pink, Purple, Yellow, Blue, and RED. Regrettably, none of these chargers made their way into the hands of the public.

Kosutami, an ardent collector of Apple prototypes and rare Apple paraphernalia, recently acquired a MagSafe charger in the distinctive Starlight hue. Sharing their insights on the matter, they remarked, “I’ve recently stumbled upon some prototypes and new information. It appears that the MagSafe chargers were originally planned to be available in various colors, much like the vibrant MagSafe MacBook charging cables, but with a more saturated palette. I even had the opportunity to test it out with the unreleased Magic Charger.

The rationale behind Apple’s decision to abandon the colored MagSafe chargers remains a mystery. It is plausible that the company deemed the colors incongruous with its overarching design aesthetic. Another possibility is that the manufacturing costs associated with the colored chargers proved exorbitant. Whatever the underlying cause, Apple’s choice not to release the colored MagSafe chargers has left numerous enthusiasts disappointed. These chargers would have provided an avenue to introduce a splash of color to Apple’s otherwise monochromatic lineup of accessories.

However, all is not lost for those yearning for a vibrant MagSafe charging experience. Third-party manufacturers have stepped up, introducing their versions of the chargers in various colors. Not only are these chargers often more budget-friendly than Apple’s offerings, but they also deliver comparable performance levels.

Nothing Set to Launch Phone (2) with Enhanced Features and Sustainable Approach

Nothing, the emerging technology startup, is gearing up to release its second smartphone, the Phone (2), this summer. Positioned as a compelling option in the premium mid-range segment, the device promises an array of upgrades. Notably, it will be powered by the advanced Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC, marking a significant leap from its predecessor’s Snapdragon 778G+ processor. Nothing has confirmed notable improvements in battery capacity and display size while emphasizing its sustainable practices throughout the device’s production process. The company’s commitment extends far beyond simply omitting the charger from the packaging.

Recently, Nothing took to Twitter to reveal some intriguing details about the Phone (2). The company proudly announced that the device had earned SGS certification for its impressively low carbon footprint, measuring 53.45kg—more than 5kg less than its predecessor, Phone (1). This remarkable achievement is particularly notable considering the Phone (2) features a 200mAh increase in battery capacity and a 0.15″ larger screen compared to the original model. With a 6.7-inch display, the Nothing Phone (2) is expected to boast an OLED panel, although specific details are yet to be disclosed. The device will house a robust 4,700mAh battery, ensuring long-lasting performance.

While the Phone (2) charging capabilities remain undisclosed, it’s safe to assume that the package will not include a charger. In line with the industry trend, smartphone manufacturers have been committed to environmental sustainability by omitting wall chargers and earbuds from their product boxes. Although critics argue that this cost-saving strategy benefits companies more than the planet, Apple pioneered the movement, and many others have followed suit. Under CEO Carl Pei’s guidance, nothing boldly decided to remove the charger from the Phone (1) packaging and this approach will continue with the Phone (2).

Like its predecessor, the Nothing Phone (2) will receive three years of major Android OS upgrades and four years of security updates. Nothing has implemented several additional measures to minimize the device’s ecological footprint as part of its broader environmental efforts. You can refer to the comprehensive details here to learn more about these initiatives.

Yuzu: The Game-Changing Switch Emulator Lands on Android

Emulation has long found a home in the Android environment, allowing players to recreate vintage gaming experiences. On the other hand, navigating the intricate landscape of producing and publishing emulators has proven to be a legal minefield, leading to the failure of many such initiatives. While emulators for obsolete platforms typically avoid legal attention, recent events around the Nintendo Switch emulator Skyline serve as a reminder that modern console emulation can swiftly attract the ire of corporations.

Despite Skyline’s setback, a new Switch emulator has appeared on the Play Store. Yuzu is an emulator that lets you play pirated Switch games on your Android mobile, albeit with a few glitches initially. While it is still in its early stages, Yuzu is currently the best way to enjoy your favorite Switch titles on Android.

Yuzu is free to download, but an Early Access edition is available for purchase, allowing you to test new features before they are officially launched. Furthermore, Yuzu’s development is open source, allowing interested parties to view the source code on their GitHub page. However, because this is the emulator’s first public journey into the Android arena, there may be some initial stumbling blocks to overcome.

The Yuzu website offers a detailed description of performance predictions across various phone types. While owners of high-end Android gaming phones should usually have smooth emulation, the website notes that “a regular Samsung Galaxy S23, on the other hand, is a boiling machine, climbing to 90°C in seconds.” Despite sharing similar hardware characteristics with the best Android handsets, gaming-oriented phones prioritize sufficient cooling methods, typically adding specialized space and fans, allowing them to manage Yuzu’s demands successfully.

Regarding Yuzu emulation, temperature control isn’t the only thing to consider. The recommended RAM size for optimal performance is 8GB, with the most resource-intensive Switch titles, such as The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, requiring a whopping 12GB. Fortunately, Yuzu provides a detailed list of tested games on the emulator and any known issues with them.

Emulation enterprises are fraught with complications, but if Yuzu can successfully traverse the legal minefield, it can establish itself as a prominent emulator on the Android platform.
